Kakamega County Launches Construction Of Ksh.1.2B Fertilizer Manufacturing Plant

Kakamega County on Wednesday launched the construction of a fertilizer manufacturing plant at Matawa Industrial Park in Mumias West Sub-county.The Ksh.1.2 billion plant is expected to utilise organic waste collected from the 14 Lake Region Economic Bloc (LREB) counties to manufacture organic fertilizer and animal feeds.

The project will be undertaken by US firm Regen Organics.

Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony attended by US Ambassador to Kenya Meg Whitman, Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa said the project marks a significant step towards addressing food security, promoting wealth creation, and sanitation not only for Kakamega County but the entire LREB region.

“If anyone was in doubt about our resolve and strategy to transform lives, today’s launch of our fertilizer plant is the answer. I am profoundly excited by the presence of Regen Organics in our County, said Governor Barasa.

Kakamega is among eight Counties selected by the Kenya Investment Mechanism (KIM) to participate in the U.S.A- Kenya trade agreement seeking to partner with devolved units and the private sector to advance Kenya’s journey to self-reliance by contributing to job creation, improving economic growth, and expanding tax revenues in Kenya’s secondary cities and rural areas.

In the partnership, the County’s Investment and Development Agency (KCIDA) successfully lobbied for an investor to establish a Waste to Fertilizer and Animal feeds Plant in the County.

The event was attended by Vihiga Governor  Dr. Wilbur  Otichilo, Kakamega Deputy Governor  Ayub Savula, County Assembly Speaker James Namatsi, the County Executive, CEO KCIDA Elizabeth Asichi, various Development partners, and farmers from the region.
